Yummy Homemade “Comfort-Food” Dog Meals

Happy Fall Ya’ll!

Not sure what if feels like in your part of the world but here in North Carolina, the season is a- ‘changin. Those hot, humid summer days are quickly being replaced with a cool nip in the air.

I don’t know about you, but that has me feeling all kinds of excited!

I LOVE the FALL!

I love the cool air, the changing leaves (and here in North Carolina, it is gorgeous), the smells of pumpkin and cinnamon and spice, football games and warm sweaters. You get the picture by now…

And with autumn comes another favorite of mine; comfort food. Warm and delicious foods from the crock pot. I love roasts and soups and root vegetables. The tastes and aromas are simply heavenly.

You know who else in my home loves the hearty comfort foods? My pups.

That’s right; my dogs love the simple pleasures of fall cooking as well. Especially my girl, Poppy. I know I have told you before how she is my spoiled-rotten girl. She never likes having the same thing twice in a row. So she is always excited when I prepare new meals for her or at least those she hasn’t had in a while.

If you don’t typically cook for your pets, you may be wondering if it is a healthy alternative. Well, rest-assured, it is.

Homemade dog food can improve your pet’s overall health.

The general consensus on dog food, with a few exceptions, is that if humans feed their dog a healthy omnivorous diet of people food, and if the chosen people foods are minimally processed, than it’s probably just as healthy for your dog as it is for you.

Not to mention, wholesome, home-cooked, whole foods are a whole lot better tasting than anything that comes in a powdered, puffed, dessicated, processed and extruded form. You know this to be true, and your dog knows it, too.

I like to plan out my meals for the week before I go to the grocery store. That way, I can grab everything I need at one time and hopefully will not need to go back again until the following week.

I am a “once a week shopping” kind of girl.

Check below to see what I have on tap for my pups this week. I have included the recipes if you think you may like to try one or all of them.

  • Doggy hamburger helper– Combine 1 cup of browned hamburger meat with 2 tbsp cottage cheese, add 2 chopped boiled eggs, 1 jar of baby food carrots and 1 jar of baby food green beans. Lastly, add ½ cup of cooked plain oatmeal. Serve within three days.

  • Doggy fish dinner– mix 1 can of boneless salmon, 1 beaten egg and 3 tbsp cornmeal and form the mixture into patties. Fry the patties in a tbsp. of a healthy oil of your choice, such as coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil and brown on both sides. Make small bites of the patties and stir with boiled and chopped vegetables of 1 potato, 1 stalk of celery and 1 carrot.  Add cottage cheese for consistency.  Finish it off with 1 tbsp peanut butter and serve.

  • Doggy casserole– Stir together a mixture of 3tbsp unsalted chicken broth, ½ cup cooked brown rice, 1 cup boiled and chopped poultry and ½ cup boiled mixed vegetables. You can add a doggy multivitamin supplement for good measure. Store the unused food in refrigerator and serve within three days.

  • Dog biscuits– Mix ½ tbsp baking powder in 1 ½ cups of whole wheat flour. Stir in ¾ cup milk and add the same amount of peanut butter to it along with 1 tbsp honey. Make dough out of the mixture and roll out on a floured surface into ¼ of inch thickness. Cut into biscuit sized pieces. Put them on a greased cookie sheet in a preheated oven at 375 degrees and leave until brown.
